Meidän täytyy valvoa jottemme nukkuisi, sillä maailma on liukas, by Finnish sound and experimental video artist Pietu Arvola, is a hauntingly beautiful collection of evolving soundscapes that linger in a space between clarity and the ungraspable. Composed during a year shaped by personal loss and a seasonless grey stillness, the album conveys a quiet unease where time seems suspended and emotion moves beneath the surface.
Field recordings from the last natural forests of southern Finland; the sound of wet undergrowth, branches moving with the wind, creatures wailing in the distance, are carefully woven together with microtonal bells, processed acoustic fragments, and subtle electronic textures. The boundaries between organic and synthetic dissolve, creating sounds that feel tactile yet impossible to locate.
The album’s title is taken from a cryptic letter by the 19th-century painter Pekka Halonen. In Arvola’s hands, the phrase becomes a call for wakefulness in a world that numbs. Rather than offering escape or resolution, the music invites the listener to slow down and remain present, to notice the detail within disorientation.
This is a work of restraint and attention. It asks to be inhabited rather than explained, resonating with the uncertainty of the present while holding space for something tender beneath the noise.
