The release of pianist Robert Glasper\u2019s acclaimed Blue Note debut Canvas in 2005 signaled the arrival of a singular new voice in jazz, and his 2007 follow-up In My Element delivered on that promise by solidifying Glasper\u2019s status as a rising star who was taking the music someplace new. Featuring his acoustic trio with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, the album showcased the group\u2019s intuitive interplay and expanded the musical possibilities of where a modern jazz piano trio might go by delving even further into his hip-hop and gospel roots. In My Element also reinforced Glasper\u2019s budding reputation as a distinctive composer whose unique harmonic imprint and affecting melodies are apparent on the album\u2019s seven original tunes including the brightly swinging opener \u201cG&B,\u201d the mesmerizing \u201cOf Dreams to Come,\u201d the gospel influenced \u201cY\u2019outta Praise Him,\u201d and \u201cOne for \u2018Grew,\u201d a dedication to his mentor Mulgrew Miller. The album\u2019s covers also showed the diversity of Glasper\u2019s influences including \u201cBeatrice\u201d by saxophonist Sam Rivers, a mash-up of \u201cMaiden Voyage\/Everything In Its Right Place\u201d which laid Herbie Hancock\u2019s melody over Radiohead chords, and \u201cJ Dillalude,\u201d a medley of beats by the late great hip-hop producer J Dilla played \u201ctrio style\u201d at Q-Tip\u2019s suggestion.<\/p>\n
The album gets its first-ever vinyl release with this Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.<\/p>\n
