Coltrane\u2019s Classic Quartet was not as fully established as it would soon become and there was a meteoric fifth member of Coltrane\u2019s group those nights\u2014 visionary multi instrumentalist Eric Dolphy.<\/p>\n<p>Ninety minutes of never-before-heard music from this group were recently discovered at the New York Public Library, offering a glimpse into a powerful musical partnership that ended much too soon.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to some well-known Coltrane material (\u201cMy Favorite Things\u201d, \u201cImpressions\u201d, \u201cGreensleeves\u201d), there is a breathtaking feature for Dolphy\u2019s bass clarinet on \u201cWhen Lights Are Low\u201d and the only known non-studio recording of Coltrane\u2019s composition \u201cAfrica\u201d, from the Africa\/Brass album.<\/p>\n<p>This recording represents a very special moment in John Coltrane&#8217;s journey\u2014the summer of 1961\u2014 when his signature, ecstatic live sound, commonly associated his Classic Quartet of &#8217;62 to &#8217;65, was first maturing and when he was drawing inspiration from deep, African sources\u2014 and experimenting with the two-bass idea both in the studio (Ol\u00e9) and on stage.
