The Detroit born alto saxophonist Sonny Red made only one album as a leader for Blue Note, but Out of the Blue remains a gem of the catalog deserving of much wider recognition. Red\u2019s lightly swinging style shines on this 8-song set of bluesy originals and obscure standards, which was drawn from two different quartet sessions. The first session\u2014recorded in December 1959 with Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums\u2014yielded six of the album\u2019s final cuts including the buoyant opener \u201cBluesville\u201d and the stunning ballad \u201cStay As Sweet As You Are.\u201d Red returned to the studio in January 1960 once again with Kelly on piano, but this time joined by Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums, a trio that was also Miles Davis\u2019 rhythm section at the time having just recorded on Kind of Blue the year before. The album\u2019s final two tracks feature this quartet on Red\u2019s original \u201cThe Lope\u201d and the ballad \u201cStairway to the Stars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the \u201cTone Poet,\u201d on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels.<\/p>\n
Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180 gm audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc. Every aspect of these Blue Note\/Tone Poet releases is done to the highest possible standard. It means that you will never find a superior version. This is IT.<\/p>\n
Blue Note Records\u2019 Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series is produced by Joe Harley and features all-analog, mastered-from-the-original-master-tape 180g audiophile vinyl reissues in deluxe gatefold packaging.
